Do I have to answer this question again?

April 16, 2008

The following is yet another superb interview, this time with my alter ego since I appear to be getting little response from the Force. They can employ Staff Officer’s to SMT’s, they can even not involve BPA’s in key issues, and then cover up why they did not involve the BPA in the first place.

But as soon as you dare question certain actions about ethnicity and suggest that they could do better, it all becomes personal; be aware that you will face not only a brick wall; but an unequal stubborness and a desire to prove you wrong.

Twining: The role of a Black Police Association, (BPA), encompasses the following basic right. As Minority ethnic colleagues of colour we have the right to work within an environment which is free from racial and religious discrimination. We will strive for this right. We will ALSO endeavour to promote racial equality within the community. The Shireshire Police Association will pursue this right by consisting of an executive; including members from the community.

Twining:We will work to our constitution within the spirit of effective race relation’s.

Response: ER YES OF COURSE YOU MUST.

Twining: We will consult and advise on various steering groups.

Response: WELL ER WE WILL LISTEN TO ONLY YES PEOPLE ANYWAY.

Twining: We will assist at recruitment and training events and we will engage the community, but this is not our priority. Our priority is support.

Response: WELL NOT QUITE; YOUR PRIORITY IS TO DO AS WE SAY, NOT TO THINK.

Twining: ER..We ask that we are consulted on all issues of ethnicity and that documentation and information in relation to ethnicity is not kept from us.

Response: WE MAY WITHHOLD KEY INFORMATION FROM YOU, BUT ONLY IF WE WANT TO.

Twining: We ask that the Force develops a record of the relationship between the BPA and itself and that record is open.

Response: WE WON’T KEEP A FILE OR RECORD ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BPA AND PROGRESS. THAT WAY WE ARE IN CONTROL. AND YOU ALL GET CONFUSED AS YOU ALL MOVE ON.

Twining: We ask for allocated time so that we can plan and run an effective support association.

Response: TIME, WHAT TIME?

Twining: We ask for a reasonable budget and time.  Response: YOU WANT FUNDING AS WELL? So, why is the BPA different to other networks?

Twining: (1) The disproportional impact of race on policing and the sheer amount of support, (numbers), that we have historically had to offer colleagues since our inception makes us different to other networks. (2) Race is recognised as a differentiated theme nationally, which causes community friction, murder and rioting. None of the other strands cause this friction to the extent that race does. (3) Also consider the experience of minority ethnic colleagues of colour nationally. Despite these barriers we continue to challenge this racial inequality. Not once have we had any admission of any racism in the Force; which clearly then begs the question why do we exist?

Response: WELL ER WHEN YOU PUT IT LIKE THAT?
